In 1977, anti-whaling proetsters launched Zodiacs from Middleton Beach, Albany, Western Australia. The locals told them they were crazy. The area was known for white pointer sharks who came close to shore attracted by dead sperm whales in the water waiting to be processeed.
The great whites disappeared when whaling closed in 1978 and shark sighting have been rare.
A 37-year-old man was attacked at Middleton Beach on Saturday by a white pointer shark.
